(My
first day of school)
Steps To Education Gates.
By Derek

The
expression on my mom’s face seems priceless as we walked toward the traffic of
little bodies in the school yard.
She
kept trying to convince me, everything was going to be fine.
I
am going to love it, she would say.
Like
a nice rehearsed speech her words stayed with me.
I
courageously held her hand very tightly and took a deep breath.
This
was going to be my gateway to education!
My
first classroom friend…
Eyes
big and bulging with streams of endless tears,
He
clung to his mom’s skirt.
I
watched from the same level as that skirt,
His
mom trying to hide what had become known as the goods.
This
was going to be my gateway to education!
The
alliances…
How
quickly the snot-filled noses boys bonded,
How
quickly the prissy little girls talked and talked and talked.
The
query eye little boy with glasses didn’t mind being by himself one bit.
He
stood by himself and waited orders from the tall woman who we called miss.
Turned
out, he was standing in a pool of piss.
This
was going to be my gateway to education.
